How do I Measure for Proper Shoe Size?

Proper fitting shoes are essential for our day-to-day comfort. For those who spend a good portion of the day on their feet, incorrectly fitting shoes can cause pain, swelling and blisters. With so many choices of shoe store, both physical and online, it is important to know your correct shoe size when looking for a new pair of shoes. Measuring your feet is not rocket science; in fact, you can do it yourself at home.

Instructions

Sit in a regular dining or computer chair. Place a piece of paper on the floor in front of you, and put your foot flat on it.

Trace around your foot using a pencil. Be careful not to trace away from the edges of your foot, or you could end up with a false measurement.

Measure the distance between the two longest points on your tracing using a ruler or tape measure. Subtract 1/5-inch from your measurement to determine your foot length.

Measure the distance between the two widest points on your tracing. Subtract 1/5-inch from your measurement to determine your foot width.

Use a shoe size conversion chart to determine your shoe size. Search shoe websites for conversion charts (see Resources for examples).
