How to Replace Zipper Fields on Boots

Sometimes the zipper breaks in your favorite pair of boots and you have a choice of throwing the boots away, taking the boots to a costly shoemaker or replacing the zipper field yourself. If the zipper field cannot be repaired, you can buy a zipper in the same length and replace it by hand. You will need sturdy needles, thread and thimbles in order to sew thicker materials such as leather.

Instructions

Remove the stitching on either side of the old zipper using a seam ripper. Remove the zipper and pull out any extraneous threads.

Purchase a zipper that is as similar to your old zipper as possible. It should be the same length and color.

Install the zipper from the bottom. Sew back and forth to make sure the zipper is held in place. Since boots are usually made of leather or other heavy material, use sturdy needles, heavy thread and a high-quality thimble.

Working from the inside of the boots, carefully stitch up each side of the zipper.

Clip any hanging threads because they can get stuck in the zipper.
