Dying old shoes is a cheap way to revamp your wardrobe. Unfortunately, while some parts of the shoe readily accept color, other parts aren't as easy to dye. Ankle padding is sometimes Scotch-Guarded against stains. If this is the case, you may want to invest in a new pair of shoes or leave off dying the ankle padding. If, however, the padding is made from natural sources or came with a manufacturer's notice that it is safe to dye, you'll find dying the ankle padding to be uncomplicated and an ultimately rewarding project.
Instructions

Spread newspapers over your work area. Put on latex gloves. Arrange supplies on top of the newspaper.
2Remove the laces and the inserts from the shoes. Clean the shoe with the toothbrush, removing all residue from the ankle padding. Allow time to dry if necessary.
3Use the painter's tape to cover the outside of the shoe. If possible, bend the tongues forward and tape them in place.
4Paint the ankle padding according to instructions on the paint container. Use the blow dryer to set the paint. This should protect the shoes in case you plan on putting them in the dryer.
5Spray with waterproof shoe protector. Allow to dry.
6Remove the tape. Replace shoe inserts and shoelaces.
