Large Enough

Walking shoes that are too tight may cause blisters, corns and bunions.

Too Large May Cause Problems

Walking shoes that are too large can also cause blisters and other problems.

Bottom Line

Walking shoes do not necessarily need to be larger than your regular shoes. However, make sure all your shoes are fitted properly. Walking shoes, as well as other types of shoes, should be fitted in the late afternoon, since feet tend to swell during the day. While trying on walking shoes, walk around the store for a few minutes, as walking also causes feet to swell somewhat. When standing, check the distance between the tip of your longest toe and the end of the shoe, which should be 1/2 to 3/4 inch. If your feet are different sizes, which is common, buy the larger size. When walking around the store, your heels should not slip in the shoe. The sides of the shoe should be comfortably snug, not floppy or restrictive. Do not purchase any kind of shoe based solely on what size your other shoes are.
