How to Break in Doc Marten Boots

Doc Martens, aside from being a fashion statement, are solid, sturdy boots that are a great financial investment for the wear and tear they can withstand. They were originally designed by a German doctor during World War II as a protective measure for his ankle after a skiing injury. Like most boots, however, they can be difficult to break in.

Instructions

Moisturize the Boot. Rub Vaseline into the interior of the boot, paying special attention to the stiffest areas, like by your heels. This will soften the leather and make it more flexible.

Flex the Leather. After you work in the Vaseline, soften the leather further by flexing it, simulating extended wear. Alternate pushing the leather in and out, pressing down and squeezing in and twisting from side to side. Continue to rub the leather with your fingers to retain the warmth.

Wear the Boots. Wearing a pair of thicker than usual socks, wear the boots in short segments, like doing chores around the house or on limited walking excursions.

Rub in Vaseline After Wear. Apply more Vaseline to the interior of the boot to maintain the softened texture as you mold it to your foot.

Repeat steps 1-4 until your shoe is adequately worn in. Give this process at least a week, and two to three for maximum comfort.
