How to Dye Your Sneakers

Get a new look without purchasing a new pair of sneakers. Use artistic talents to spice up your least favorite sneakers within your own home with a do-it-yourself dye kit. With only a few materials and simple instructions, turn plain white sneakers into lively, summer-inspired ones.

Instructions

Clean the sneakers the day prior to dyeing. Use a toothbrush and a cleanser to scrub off any dirt. Rinse thoroughly and air dry. To avoid shrinkage, keep them away from long periods of direct sunlight and heat.

Fill a large basin with hot water. Make sure there is enough water to cover the whole sneaker when added in later, but not too much to overflow. Read label on liquid fabric dye bottle and see how much salt is needed for that specific brand. Put on plastic gloves and add dye until you find the right shade. The more dye you add, the darker the shade will be.

Place sneakers under hot running water in the sink.

Soak wet, white sneakers in the dye concoction in the basin.

Use a wooden spoon to stir sneakers in dye bath for allotted time mentioned on dye bottle instructions. Then, rinse.

Air dry sneakers in bathroom windowsill for one day or use blow dryer to speed up the process. Another trick is to place sneakers under a hooded hair dryer for 30 to 40 minutes for faster results.
