How to Wash Tatami Birkenstocks

Prior to 1966, foot-healthy Birkenstock shoes were available only in Germany. Over the years Birkenstock shoes expanded to include sandals, shoes and clogs in the tatami style. Tatami-style shoes are closed-toe Birkenstock clogs with soft suede leather and a tailored buckle closure. Like all Birkenstock shoes, tatami-style clogs are designed for endurance and longevity, but proper care and protection can extend the life of your tatami Birkenstocks even further.

Instructions

Brush the suede tops of your tatami Birkenstock clogs with a suede brush or a nutbuck brush. Brush the suede using short, firm strokes. Brushing lifts dirt and dust from inside the suede.

Apply a dime-sized amount of gentle leather cleaner to clean, soft cloth. Rub the cloth in gentle circular motions on any stains or spots on the suede. Suede responds poorly to harsh scrubbing, so pretend you're coaxing, not forcing, the spot out. Allow your Birkenstocks to dry completely away from direct sunlight.

Brush your tatami Birkenstocks again after drying to polish the surface and smooth out any uneven texture in the suede.

Apply foot bed cleaner to the sole of your shoe using firm, circular motions. Concentrate cleaning where the oil and dirt collect most heavily, such as the front and back of the foot bed. Use a dry paper towel to remove any buildup or dirt from the sole and continue cleaning as necessary.
