How to Accurately Size Your Foot

A properly fitted shoe can mean the difference between a fun night of dancing and an evening of sitting on the sidelines nursing a blister. Measuring your foot and determining your shoe size accurately can help you avoid this experience. However, shoe sizes are not necessarily uniform between brands. This means that even if you are a 6 in one brand, you may need to try a 6.5 or 5.5 in another brand to find your proper fit. Measuring your foot gives you a good place to start.

Wait until the end of the day. Your feet may be slightly larger at this point. If you measure when you wake up and buy shoes accordingly, they could end up being on the tight side later.

Put on the socks you intend to wear with the shoes you have in mind. For example, if you are looking for hiking boots, wear a pair of thick hiking socks.

Place two sheets of paper in front of a chair, and then sit down. Put one foot on each piece of paper.

Lean forward, keeping your feet flat on the paper. Draw an outline of each foot. Keep the pencil vertical as you do this; if you tilt it your results will not be accurate.

Measure the longest part and the widest part of both of the foot tracings you created. Take the larger of the measurements and subtract 1/5 inch. These are your foot measurements as used to determine your shoe size. You can now compare these measurements to a shoe size chart to find your size.
