Finding the right pair of new shoes may be an accomplishment, but breaking in new shoes can be painful. Since people do not come with standard-sized feet, every pair of shoes will fit each person a little differently. Even one shoe size does not always fit in the same way. If your shoes slide against your heels or ankles, you will get blisters as a result of the friction. Commercial heel inserts are available, but they can be expensive if you need them for every pair of shoes you own (and for some people, that's a lot of shoes). Instead, prevent blisters and help give your new shoes a comfortable fit using a few simple supplies.

Instructions

    1

Cut cardboard strips approximately the size of a standard adhesive bandage, about 4 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. The cardboard strip should fit comfortably inside the curve of the heel portion of your shoe. Cut the cardboard from the back of a note pad, an old box or a discarded food package.

    2

Place the cardboard inside the shoe and bend it to the curve of the back of the shoe. Press and mold it so it aligns with the shoe's natural curve. Trim to fit if necessary; the cardboard needs to curve only around the back of the heel where the shoe rubs.

    3

Attach double-sided tape to the back of the cardboard strip and press it into your shoe. The cardboard will prevent the shoe from sliding against your ankle because the fit will be more snug. If the cardboard wears down after regular use, simply cut another strip and repeat the process.
